How to Use an Espresso Maker

People and restaurants often dream of having an espresso maker; that coffee smell, its intense taste, it’s truly something else. Today, we’re going to tell you all there is to know about espresso makers and how to use them.

What’s an Espresso Maker?

What we know as espresso maker is a machine that brews coffee by forcing pressurized water through a disc of ground coffee and a filter, producing a thick strong concentrated coffee called espresso.

How Does It Work?

Nowadays, millions of people brew their coffee with an espresso maker. However, a lot of people don’t really know what this machine does or how it is built. Let’s see the main parts of an espresso machine.

Water and Pump

Every espresso maker has a water tank, no matter its brand. Water can be extracted from a deposit or supply network, depending on the size of the machine and its frequency of use. Clean water with a low mineral content is usually required for this machine.

Boiler

The second most important part of an espresso maker is the boiler. It heats the water that goes through the machine. There are certain machines that have a two-heater system, but it varies from machine to machine.

Group Head

The group head is where water and coffee meet. It’s the final step of the brewing process to get the cup of coffee you’ll drink later on.

How Does It Work?

Nowadays, espresso makers are an excellent tool to brew delicious, high quality coffee. Though it may vary from brand to brand, here is the step-by-step for using an espresso maker:

Loading the Water Tank

First thing to do is fill the tank with water. Generally, water tanks have clear level markings for brewing different amounts of coffee.

Turning It On

Once you filled the tank, turn the machine on. It’s important to wait for the machine to be fully on before starting to brew.

Removing the Porta-Filter

With the machine on, remove the porta-filter. The circular filter goes inside the porta-filter. Filters come in different sizes, simple or double. Put the filter in the porta-filter.

Loading the Filter with Coffee

Now it’s time to put the ground coffee in the filter. Use a spoon to help you fill it evenly.

Tamping the Coffee

Tampers are used to press down the ground coffee, compressing it so that its taste becomes stronger.

Blocking the Filter

Lock the porta-filter into the group head.

Position your Cup

Now it’s time to put your cup directly beneath the coffee spout to receive the coffee. Make sure its size is suitable for the amount of coffee you’re brewing.

Start Brewing

Start the machine to make your espresso shot. You’ll get the delicious coffee you longed for in no time at all.
